Who we are, what we do

Pegasus Health and ProCare established Homecare Medical in February 2014 to continue the work of HML, an after-hours telephone service for GPs, which was established in late 1996. 

In 2014, Homecare Medical responded to close to one million calls from GP patients seeking medical help after-hours. Our experienced registered nurses triage calls from our Auckland base, with a South Island hub in the planning stages.

From 1 November 2015, Homecare Medical expanded its services when it won the Government’s tender to run a new national telehealth service. In our first year of operation we had more than 550,000 contacts, that's one every minute, through a range of channels.

We are committed to increased access to services for priority populations through non-phone channels (as defined in the NTS Clinical Governance Committee-endorsed Wellbeing Strategy for Priority Populations).

Keeping Kiwis well drives our passion for delivering outstanding, clinically led services to our clients and the public of New Zealand. All our people are committed to delivering quality care and important and safe information to those who call any of our services, which include:

  • nurse triage
  • health advice
  • health provider information
  • primary options for acute care (POAC).

Our roots

While the PHO partnership is young, Homecare Medical has the substantive experience of its precursor, HML, and the collective history and experience of its founders who have worked in the New Zealand healthcare sector for more than 20 years.

ProCare represents Auckland’s largest network of qualified GPs and general practice teams. The organisation has more than 180 member practices that care for more than 800,000 (including around 85,000 Maori and 100,000 Pacific) patients.

Pegasus Health (Charitable) Ltd is a primary care network and PHO providing services and support to general practices and community based health providers within Canterbury to deliver quality healthcare to over 380,000 enrolled patients. Formed in 1992, the organisation is committed to improving the health outcomes of the people in their community.

Both ProCare and Pegasus are clinically led, with strong clinical governance boards, and robust quality and professional management structures.
