After-hours service


We provide safe after-hour nurse teletriage, allowing GPs to effectively and easily meet their after-hours service provision obligations. And we've been doing that successfully since 1996, first as HML and now as Homecare Medical. Homecare Medical is staffed by registered health professionals and an administrative support team.

An important relationship

We recognise the important relationship that exists between GP and patient. To preserve this, we answer calls in your practice’s name and triage protocols are customised to your requirements. Your practice can divert your phones to us any time you need us: evenings, weekends, public holidays, during staff meetings or in times of unexpected disruption, such as earthquakes, floods or power outages. Our nurses are extensively trained and monitored and our service meets Cornerstone accreditation. 

Clinical expertise

Homecare Medical uses an international clinical decision support tool to manage all triage calls. Odyssey Tele Assess ensures we deliver safe, effective clinical advice to callers and connect them with the most appropriate care. Odyssey is supported by one of the UK’s largest software companies and has a massive international clinical community contributing to its development. As a user, we have access to best practice training, audit and other important quality systems. Globally more than 25 million teleconsults have taken place using Odyssey in seven countries and seven languages. Homecare Medical is the only organisation in New Zealand using Odyssey.

Quality assurance systems

We have a number of quality assurance processes in place to make certain our staff use the decision support tool correctly and conduct effective triages with clinically appropriate outcomes. Staff are trained and preceptored (under the guidance of an expert), and their competency is assessed and signed off before they begin handling triage calls. Robust incident and complaint management procedures are in place, and we actively seek feedback from patients and clinicians who use the service. 

We also recognise the importance of having quality staff and organisational learning and development. Our quality frameworks have been, and continue to be, developed by leading national and international experts in the telehealth field.
